The Knights of Golarion mix military structure and ranks with older ideas of knights-errant and feudal lords. Rank-and-file soldiers operate under the command of officer-knights, with knight-lieutenants and higher ranks sometimes assigned to 'errant duty', in which Knights are trusted to seek out injustice and deal with it.

OK, they add some flavor, but from a pure power balance standpoint, how could these ever be good? The Archetype features replace features from your main class, usually super essential ones.Taking Solarian, as an example, you lose the vast majority of your stellar revelations. Those power everything! You won't get your first 'regular' revelation until 8th level.Technomancer is a little better, but you're still giving up spells and magic hacks.I guess if you're a hyper specialized solider you can spare the feats, secondary fighting style.
I'm starting to love archetypes. I originally thought they were weak too, but by this point I think any class-archetype combination is worth playing. And they've been very carefully balanced for just this purpose. Many archetypes that affect higher levels start off extremely situational but clearly regain their power (and much more) at higher levels. For these classes at low levels you struggle to survive (they're low levels, not too much to worry about as you get better). At their mid levels you can work with your GM to establish the identity of your player, or in Society you'll start to find your moments in difficult times. As a level 4 Divine Champion, you could absolutely wreck undead creatures with DR 5/.
Arcanamirium Sage gives non-casters access to nearly the full casting library at level 6, the sky's the limit. Phrenic Adept scopes out a wide range of abilities defining you as a matter of mental combat.
At level 6 you're basically immune to any emotion/fear/mind-affecting/pain effect, and furthermore can identify those threats for your teammates before they harm your teammates. At high levels you start destroying. With Divine Champion you start getting to use your selected Connection spells up to 7 times per day, without spending any RP costs.
This is more than the number of spells a Mystic gives up - yes, a bit less flexible but more flavorful and can be from a different Connection than your main one.Arcanamirium Sages break fundamental limits on magic items that keep games like this from getting too crazy. I can't imagine how powerful this will be in the right hands.Phrenic Adepts get 7 flavored daily casts at higher levels just like Divine Champions, including a unique and super awesome capstone 3-in-1 spell that gives you a lot of flexibility. Recall that no core spellcaster in Starfinder has access to their entire spell list, like Clerics. You're always limited by which spells you learn as you level up.Other Archetypes are strong the whole time as you level up (Skyfire Centurion, Star Knight) or just so cheap and flavorful at such low levels that you should have no regrets (Starfinder Forerunner, Steward Officer). Starfinder Data Jockey is a special case, and I could write a whole analysis post just about it and how interesting it is.
I agree with this to a degree. But if your character is supposed to be an X who is good at Y, and you're bad at Y, your lack of agency doesn't really reinforce the character concept. It's one thing if you have an obviously min-maxed, disjointed character. It's another if your character is just bad because you wanted to be an X who does Y, need an archetype to do so, and the archetype is patently bad/poorly designed. I often say 'the rules inform the story' - in this game, the rules determine the type of story you can tell, and the type of character you can be. If the rules don't support the story you're trying to tell, it feels off.
Meh, there are always going to be beneficial choices and hindering choices, but lacking class features doesn't make a bad character no more than having them makes a good character.ETA:I often say 'the rules inform the story' - in this game, the rules determine the type of story you can tell, and the type of character you can be. If the rules don't support the story you're trying to tell, it feels off.Since you added this after I replied, I'll clearly mark my edit and reply to it.I don't think archetypes prevent or allow stories to be told/made. They just allow players to have choices independent of class. A character can be a great explorer without needing the Starfinder Forerunner for example nor does having the archetype make your character a great explorer. The way I presented Archetypes to my players was that they are their own thing. That is, that a Phrenic Adept Mechanic is not a Mechanic. I think a core part of the problem is the fact that the archetype system in Starfinder is generalized instead of the system in Pathfinder, which was more specialized. If I play an alchemist in Pathfinder, I take an alchemist to more focus my character and develop a concept into something functional.

The generalized approach of Starfinder GREATLY hinders that because the generalization removes synergistic abilities or large reworks. The end result is an archetype system that is unsatisfying and bland and which I'll probably not even look at a second time. In my opinion the archetype system replacing class features is a mistake as it punishes the classes that rely on their class features for their flavor. Solarion and Envoy rely on their revelations and inspirations to be the class and trading them away for achetype flavor really hampers the class flavor. Soldiers on the other hand are basically just picking a defined feat chain while maintaining their combat style and gear boosts and everything else!I am in favor of a choice between replacing class abilities at even levels or feats at odd levels for the archetype features.
I think that fixes the problem very nicely. Feats are nice but not nearly as necessary as class abilities for a lot of character concepts.
